Apollo 13 And Newton's First Three Laws

Marduf Little Story ... Ocean Science Logistics Islands

This is not the name of a comic book hero, but the nickname of two atypical vessels that have succeeded to sail the oceans since 1975 . Marion Dufresne Marduf, of course.

There was the Marion Dufresne 1 (left in photo) who has finished his long voyage in an Italian demolition in 2005 after being launched in 1975 to "Workshops and Building Le Havre. "It was the property of the" Maritime Messaging "which became the" Compagnie Generale Maritime (CGM) by merging with the "Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT).

His" little brother ", the Marion Dufresne 2 (right in photo) began his career as a steamer oceanographic and supply ship in 1995 after being built in the same site in Normandy.

For clarity, the Christian name of the Marion Dufresne was not that of a girl Laninon, Brest district of old, but that of a browser Malo, 18 th century, Nicolas Marion Dufresne, who has finished his journey in a tureen Maori of New Zealand in 1775. Career development fairly common for this time of discovery and humanistic approaches, not too oriented towards purely material and mercantile interests.

Marduf 2, to return to him, owner and charterer to the Prefect of the main "French Southern and Antarctic Lands" which has given arms to the CMA-CGM (Compagnie Maritime d'Armement) for logistical its sub-Antarctic islands scattered. No permanent inhabitants on these islands, but bases inhabited by a heterogeneous population and complementary specialists, both civilian and military. They combine their professional skills to ensure the French presence and conduct scientific activities in conditions of safety and comfort compatible with geographical isolation and combined with a weather sensitive.

And the oceanography in all this? Old story that dates back to the proud ship "Gallieni" mixed cargo of "Atlantic Courier". From colonial times, this type of vessel carried eastward from Marseille (average and extreme) goods, civil servants, military and other passengers. In the years fifties and sixties of last century, Madagascar was the Governor of the Southern Lands under its responsibility, and "Gallieni" was chartered to serve the islands once a year.

Malagasy teams were already on board (only in the Indian Ocean) to complete the actual crew. The boarding and loading taking place from Marseille, while some passengers were thought to benefit from these great travel logistics for "doing science". Thus, a bathymetric sonar, and a few other thermosalinograph sensors were installed.

The first detailed maps of several sites of the Kerguelen were lifted at that time. Some of them are still used today.

Then, two generations of "Marduf" took over. They were built with attention to a vocation of passenger transport, food and other materials, helicopters and fuel requirements, but scientists were widely incorporated. The IPEV (Institut Paul Emile Victor) is currently under-charterer of the Marion Dufresne 2, in charge 217 days a year to put at the disposal of offshore cruises.

transportation to the islands of ducks, penguins to the zoo and to eradicate fleas infected blocker (s) * is no longer relevant. Scientific tools are evolving to advance understanding and knowledge of our globalized old ocean. The difficult global economic situation and national spares no research at sea is, however, and hope to see a project Marduf prematurely worn by a rich and dynamic experience benefit from a makeover to continue serving the French oceanographic fleet with a good technological level and the servicing of the islands and districts taafiens.

blo * = long-eared beast, cousin of the rabbit. Prolific couples were dropped on the islands by the early navigators to serve pantry for possible survivors.
